Reliability of Asbestos Fibre Air Monitoring Results Without Metrological Traceability

Published August 29, 2024

In response to widespread industry concerns regarding the practice of using unproven volume measurements (of air) to calculate airborne asbestos fibre concentration results, and the issue of those results as fibres per millilitre (f/mL), the Asbestos and Hazardous Materials Consultants Association (AHCA) presents its inaugural Position Paper 001 “Reliability of Asbestos Fibre Air Monitoring Results Without Metrological Traceability”.

In the practice of using unproven volume measurements, it is the opinion of the AHCA that control and clearance air monitoring required per state/territory WHS regulations (during asbestos removal works) would be considered invalid and would not meet WHS Regulations and the mandated clearance standard, highlighting the potential human health risk that must be considered.

“If the result of an analysis cannot be trusted, then it has little value, and the analysis might as well have not been carried out” (Eurachem Guide 2014).

The AHCA presents attached, our Position Paper 001, and thanks all of those involved in its creation and review.
